Dailykos Dream Diary: Zombie Chris Matthews, and others

Sun Jun 08, 2008 at 06:03:51 AM PDT

Summary: This is an experimental diary.  My intention is just to rattle off some (literal) dreams I've had about people in the political world...and of course invite you to toss in your own if you'd like.

Since late 2000/early 2001, I've been recording my dreams on my computer.  Basically, I got into the study of symbolism in college, and look at my dreams as an opportunity to learn a language that my subconscious is already fluent in.  Most of my dreams are about fictional characters, but I've had a few over the years about figures from the political world.  I've been, on rare occasions, batting around the idea of doing a diary where I would share some of those politically themed dreams, and given this morning's (about a zombie Chris Matthews), I feel the time has come to do an experimental diary on this subject.

Chris Matthews

I'm at my aunt's mansion (she's not rich in waking reality, but in this dream she is).  I'd slept there overnight, and all was fine, but after I woke up (in the dream) it began to change into a place that hadn't been lived in for decades.  And anyone who went in got turned into some kind of monstrosity like you'd see in a John Carpenter movie (one guy has a mouth growing out of his stomach).
I flee the place before the same thing happens to me.  I'm with this man who either gets killed by Chris Matthews, or is already dead when he shows up.  Mr. Matthews has already been turned into an undead by the process changing the house.  He's lost one of the central teeth in his upper row, and he rips one out of the dead man in order to fill his dental gap.  The strange thing is, the tooth doesn't have a normal root, but some weird, spinal cord-looking thing dangling out of it.

Now, to fill out the diary a little better, I'd like to rattle off some other dreams I've had of people involved in politics to one degree or another.

ED Hill (Fox News anchor)

She used to work covering professional wrestling, either as a reporter or as a commentator.  She'd apparently gotten so popular at her job that she had her own bobblehead doll.

Ann Coulter

She's a teacher (this happens with a lot of political figures in my dreams), and I'm in her class.  The class was discussing rape for some reason, and I pointed out that Ms. Coulter's antagonistic way of speaking was unlikely to resolve some conflict that was going on.  She threatened me with detention and imprisonment for saying this.  I don't recall if I told her so, but if she got me thrown in prison, I planned on suing her.

Keith Olbermann

He did a bit on Countdown where something that was meant to symbolize his testicles was put on a balance/scale/whatever, and instantly dragged it down.  Though in all fairness, a feather placed afterwards was even heavier than the testicular substitute (I think).

Osama Bin Laden

I and a few of my friends caught him in the US, and in doing so were able to stop the 9/11/01 attacks.

Rush Limbaugh

He'd promoted some "get rich quick" method that, it turned out, was tied to the mafia.

Stephen Colbert

The dream basically ran along a variation of the plot for the movie The Butterfly Effect.  I went back in time to change something (that's what the movie's about).  Now in the past, I and an old friend of mine helped Mr. Colbert get his car out of a large amount of snow.  My friend got there before me, however, so I barely did any of the work, and refused to be paid by Colbert for my help, even though he'd offered.

George Bush

A band called the "Dead Peckers" came to my high school, playing in the auditorium.  Mr. Bush is there, and the band sang an anti-Bush song.  Thing was, nobody had any idea the band was going to be playing any anti-Bush songs, including Mr. Bush.  So it was a great shock when they did.  I got the feeling we were in one of those "you mustn’t say anything bad about our venerated leader" times, so there was a sense of uneasiness about the whole thing.

Well, that's it for me.  Like I said, I don't know if I'll be doing this again.  If I do, maybe I'll show how I go about interpreting these things, rather than just detailing them.
If you'd like to offer your own dreams, feel free to do so.  I think I've already broken the "this is too embarrassing to tell" barrier, so you don't have to be shy about them.

Oh, and for the record, of course they're weird.  They're dreams.
